How many elevators are there in the Empire State Building?
There are 73 elevators in the Empire State Building (ESB). Originally this building came with 63 elevators in 1931. Additional elevators to connect the 80th floor to new floors above the 80th were added later. These extra added floors were specifically built after the original 80 stories had been approved and constructed. The Empire State Building now has 73 elevators in all, including service elevators.
Besides the elevators, the Empire State Building was the first building to have more than 100 floors, 6,500 windows, and a total floor area of 2,768,591 sq ft. It is also a building with a base covering two acres (87.1 sq ft). Located in midtown Manhattan, New York City, the Empire State Building is a 1931 Art Deco skyscraper that was designed by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon. It was once the world's tallest building for nearly 40 years.
Today, the Empire State Building is considered an American cultural icon and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. Also the ESB and its ground-floor interior have been designated as a city landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. These items were officially confirmed as such by the New York City Board of Estimate.
