'Monopoly' is a board game played by two to eight players. Players move around the spaces of the board, buying and selling properties to try to become the richest player. In a standard game of 'Monopoly,' there are 12 red hotels that players can purchase and place on their properties in order to charge other players a higher rent if they land on that square. Players begin by purchasing all the properties in a street. After this, they can buy green houses, of which there are 32, until there are a maximum of four on a street. At this point in the game, the player can upgrade the four houses for one hotel.

There are 40 spaces on a 'Monopoly' board, 22 of which are properties to purchase, each marked with one of eight colours. The individual colours represent a street, of which a player must own all before purchasing houses.

'Monopoly' was created by Elizabeth Magie as a teaching tool in 1903. She called it 'The Landlord's Game'. In 1934, Charles Darrow found a copy of the game and tweaked the rules slightly, publishing it under the title 'Monopoly'. Later on, Darrow sold his game to Parker Brothers, who falsely credited Charles Darrow as the creator of the game.
