Desmond Wilkinson Llewelyn (12 September 1914--19 December 1999) was a Welsh, UK, actor, who was best known for his role as 'Q' in 17 James Bond films between 1963 and 1999. The 'Q' is a fictional character and a job title. Beginning with 'From Russia with Love' in 1963, Llewelyn appeared as 'Q' the quartermaster (a military term) of Secret Intelligence Service M16 gadget lab in every Bond film until his death, with the exception of 'Live and Let Die' in 1973, in which the character 'Q' did not appear.

Llewelyn played with all the five spies like Sean Connery, Roger Moore, etc., in his 17 films. His last appearance as 'Q' prior to his death was in the 'The World is not Enough' in 1999. The character 'Q' never appears in the novels of James Bond by the author Ian Fleming. In the Fleming novels there are frequent references to 'Q' with phrases in 'Casino Royale', 'Diamond Are For ever' and 'From Russia with Love'. In most films in which 'Q' appears, he is restricted to a ''behind the scenes'' involvement. Two notable exceptions in which 'Q' becomes directly involved in Bonds missions occur in 'Octopussy', in which 'Q' actually participates in field work including battle against the villain's henchmen and Licence to Kill in which he joins Bond. Llewelyn frequently refers to Bond as '007', in 'Golden Eye'. In the 'World is Not Enough' when he revealed his plan to retire, Bond was saddened at the prospect. In November 2011, British actor Ben Whishaw had been cast in the role.
