How many living species of alligator are there?
An alligator is a crocodilian in the genus Alligator of the family "Alligatoridae". The family "Alligatoridae" belongs to the order "Crocodilia", which has many members including crocodiles and caimans, the gharial and false gharial.
There are just two living species of alligator which are (1) the American alligator ("Alligator mississippiensis") and (2) the Chinese alligator ("Alligator sinensis"). In addition, several extinct species of alligator are known from fossil remains. The picture is of an American alligator.
