Queen Elizabeth II became the longest-reigning British monarch on 9 September 2015 when she surpassed the reign of her great-great-grandmother Victoria of 63 years, 7 months and 2 days. There have been a further three monarchs that have reigned for over 50 years.
The five monarchs that have reigned for over 50 years are:
Queen Elizabeth II Ascended: February 6, 1952 - Today: 27 December 2016
64 years, 10 months and 20 days (23,701 days).
Queen Victoria Ascended: June 20, 1837 - Died: January 22, 1901
63 years, 7 months and 2 days (23,226 days).
King George III Ascended: October 25, 1760 - Died: January 29, 1820
59 years, 3 months and 2 days (21,644 days).
King Henry III Ascended: October 18, 1216 - Died: November 16, 1272
56 years and 29 days (20,483 days).
King Edward III Ascended: January 25, 1327 - Died: June 21, 1377
50 years, 4 months and 25 days (18,410 days).
James VI was the King of Scotland from 24 July 1567 until his death on 27 March 1625.
Following the death of Elizabeth I in 1603 her cousin, James VI of Scotland, succeeded to the English throne as James I in the Union of the Crowns. James was descended from the Tudors through his great-grandmother, Margaret Tudor, the eldest daughter of Henry VII. In 1604, he adopted the title King of Great Britain. However, the two parliaments remained separate until the Acts of Union in 1707. James I reigned for 22 years and 3 days.
