How many ounces are in a pound?
The conversion factor from pounds to ounces is 16 (for troy weight, it is 12). Pound is a unit of mass in U.S customary, imperial and other different measurement systems including the historical ones (Romans called it "libra" and that's why it's abbreviated as "lb" and "lbs" today). After the metric system is accepted in many countries, it's replaced with "kilogram" but it's still one of the most common weight units in US, UK, Canada and a few other countries.
Ounce is used as a unit of mass in imperial and U.S. customary measurement systems. It is also used as a volume unit but in this case, fluid ounce is referred. The abbreviation is "oz".

Being Canadian, I can tell you that the metric system has completely replaced the imperial system in Canada. We adopted it in the early eighties. Older people clung to this outdated system at the time because they had lived with imperial all their lives. Once metric was taught in schools it was accepted immediately by younger people because metric is so much easier to understand with everything being tenths.

When dealing with gold, as the picture implies, there are 12 ounces to a pound. Otherwise, this question needs lacks clarity!

I understand metric and I use it but I learned Imperial and I still think in ounces and pounds. Metric is so much easier, you don't have to remember oddly numbered amounts.

Pounds aren't units of mass, they're units of weight. A slug is the unit of mass in the imperial system.

South Africa officially adopted the metric system in the 70's but I know some were using it in the 60's.

The imperial system of weights and measures just seems so backwards in the 21st century. Learnt the imperial system in primary school and metric system in high school. When I worked as a mechanical fitter both systems were used as the machinery I worked on was imported from all over the world. The metric system is easier and more intuitive.

I find it easy because I was raised on it. Have to do quick calculations when we travel in Europe.

Suzanne Beer, I work in both, but much prefer metric. The conversions are all powers of 10, and all you do is move the decimal point. It literally couldn't be simpler

as a german aeronautical engineer, that graduated from MIT munich in 1976 , having a maintenance company in the Caymans and dealing with the DIN and AS System are confronted with fractions 3/8/ 19/32, 1/2(thats the easy one eguals to 13mm. drives me nuts.

Tracy Dougall, Canadian also and at 62 I will admit I still use both sets of measurements. I can identify with both and occasionally need to consult a conversion table...love google for that!

I can sort of understand people clinging to imperial for tradition, but metric is SO much simpler. God help us, if Brexit happens here we may be back to groats and pecks!
