Theodore Seuss Gesiel used 3 pen names for children's books. The most well-known is Dr. Seuss. There is also Theo LeSieg and Rosetta Stone. The first is his middle name with the title Dr., since his father had wanted him to practice medicine. LeSieg was his last name spelled backwards. The last was in honor of his second wife, whose maiden name was Stone. He did use others (Theophrastus Geisel, L. Pasteur, D. G. Rossetti '25) for political cartoons.

Theo Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 2, 1904. He passed away on September 4, 1991, at the age of 87. Throughout his life, he published over 60 books. Many have been adapted for movies, television shows, and at least one Broadway musical!

Although he preferred the German pronunciation, which rhymes with voice, he used the Anglicized version, which rhymes with goose. It was easier for children to say, plus it was similar to Mother Goose.

Dr. Seuss was a pen name for him, but it was real. When Theo lived in La Jolla, California, his mail was often mixed up with Dr. Hans Suess, who also lived in La Jolla. Dr. Hans Suess was a nuclear physicist.

Theo drew political cartoons between 1941 and 1942. Some were rather savage. During the war, he was anti-Japanese. His cartoons were racist and urged the killing of "Japs". After the war, he visited Japan. It is thought "Horton Hears a Who" was an atonement for these cartoons. It was dedicated to a friend he made in Japan.
