Women's lacrosse is played by teams of 12 players, including a goalkeeper, five attackers and six defenders. The game was originally played by Native Americans but the modern women's game was introduced at St Leonard's School in St Andrews, Scotland, in 1890. The rules differ from men's field lacrosse, which despite the name is often considered an entirely different sport and only has 10 players on a team.

The aim of the game is to score points by hurling a ball into the opponent team's goal. Players use a long-handled stick with a net on one end to catch, cradle and pass a solid rubber ball.

A game of women's lacrosse lasts 60 minutes with a ten-minute break halfway through. It is played on a field with the minimum dimensions of 120 yards by 70 yards (109.7 m x 64 m).

Each of the five attackers have different roles. One has the sole purpose of scoring goals, but two others can also score goals as well as play in the rest of the field. The remaining two are responsible for transferring the ball from the defenders to the attackers. Similarly, the defenders have different roles, too. These include protecting the goal, intercepting passes, blocking the opponent's attackers and passing the ball to their own attackers.
