Presented to the United States of America by the people of France in 1886, the Statue of Liberty sits on a 12-acre island in New York City Harbor, NY. The crown of the statue has 25 windows and seven spikes. Most, if not all American, believe that there is nothing that symbolizes what America is more than the Statue of Liberty.

Regarding the crown and its spikes, some art critics and local historians have stated that the seven spikes "represent the seven seas and seven continents of the world". Also this idea is noted on Web sites of the U.S. National Park Service and the Statue of Liberty Club. However, "It's not true," says Barry Moreno, author of "The Statue of Liberty Encyclopedia" and the official librarian of Liberty Island National Park. The spikes are sun rays, he says, and the circle is "simply a halo or what in art is called a nimbus, showing she (Liberty Enlightening the World) is divine.

The Statue of Liberty is much more than its crown. It is often described in many ways as a "masterpiece of the human spirit" that "endures as a highly potent symbol—inspiring contemplation, debate and protest—of ideals such as liberty, peace, human rights, abolition of slavery, democracy and opportunity."
