There were nine prisons operated by Her Majesty's Prison (HMP) Service in the U.K. that closed in 2013. These prisons were: (1) Blundeston, (2) Bullwood Hall, (3) Camp Hill, (4) Canterbury, (5) Dorchester, (6) Gloucesteer, (7) Kingston, (8) Shepton Mallet, and (9) Shrewsbury.

Blundeston Prison was in the Waveney district of Suffolk, England. It was a Category C men's prison with a total of 526 inmates in 2008. The Category C concerned prisoners (aged 21 or over) who were not trusted in the open but who were unlikely to escape. All of the following closed prisons were also Category C except for one.

Hockley in Essex, England held the Bullwood Hall Prison. It was a women's prison and Young Offenders Facility. It had 248 inmates in December 2012. Next Camp Hill was a men's prison, located in Newport, Isle of Wight. This prison was adjacent to the Albany and Parkhurst prisons (both still open). Fourth, Canterbury Prison in Kent ran from 1808 - 2013. It had 314 inmates in August 2008.

In December 2013, Dorchester Prison closed. It held 252 prisoners in August 2008 from Dorchester, Poole, and Bournemouth Crown Courts. Gloucester Prison, a Category B men's prison, opened in 1791 and closed in March 2013. In 2005 it had 323 criminals. Kingston Prison with most of its inmates serving life sentences closed in March 2013. Shepton Mallet, the oldest prison with 189 inmates closed on March 28, 2013. Making the ninth was Shrewsbury (1793 - 2013). It is now a historical site.
