How many restrooms are there in the Pentagon?
The Pentagon has five floors above ground and two basement levels. When the Pentagon was being built the United States was still segregated by race, therefore, planners designed the building to have separate bathrooms for black and white employees. There are 284 bathrooms within the Pentagon.
The Pentagon when it created its restrooms was operating in compliance with existing public policy and later with federal OSHA regulations (Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations). The laws in the U.S. require employers to be flexible in developing procedures to ensure that workers have access to toilet facilities as needed. Today the actual number of toilets required in the workplace is determined by the number of employees (male and female) at the worksite. This fact about the number and the need in the 1960s and 70s to meet specific gender facility OSHA requirements has resulted with the Pentagon's 284 allocation of bathrooms.
