How many states in the United States of America have sand dunes?
15 States in the United States have sand dunes. North America's tallest dunes rise over 750 feet high against the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Colorado.
The main dune field grows to enormous heights not only because of a complex wind regime, but also due to sand carried by Medano and Sand Creeks. These streams seasonally carve out and carry sand from the east and north side of the dunefield and re-deposit it where wind can transport it back to the dune field.

Apparently, the author thinks the number of states is more important than listing the states themselves. It makes no sense to me!

E11-Hitman, I have been able to find the following states, 5 of which I have personal knowledge of: Massachusetts, North Carolina, New York, New Jersey, Washington, Oregon, California, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Colorado, Nevada, Nebraska, South Carolina and Florida. There are undoubtedly a few more associated with the other Great Lakes besides Lake Michigan. I agree that this question was inadequately answered.

More info about the states with sand dunes. As a life long Michigander, I can tell you Michigan has lots dunes on Lakes Michigan(UP and LP), Lake Superior, and Lake Huron, both large and small dunes, but all are amazing.

In fact, almost every single one of the 50 U.S. states has sand dunes, with the only exception of the states of West Virginia and Tennessee which do not have any.
