Albert Einstein was married twice, first to Mileva Marić between 1903 and 1919. His second wife was Elsa Löwenthal. They were married between 1919 and 1936, when Elsa died.

Mileva Marić was a fellow student with Einstein at the Zurich Polytechnic in the late 1890s, studying mathematics and physics, with the intent of teaching in secondary schools. Her studies were interrupted when she became pregnant with Einstein's child in 1901. Their first child was born in 1902, they were married in 1903. Einstein had three children with his first wife, "Lieserl", Hans and Eduard "Tete". Problems in their marriage led to their separation in 1914 and divorce in 1919.

Elsa Löwenthal was his cousin, first cousin maternally and a second cousin paternally. She was married to Max Löwenthal, bore two children and divorced her first husband in 1908. The relationship between Einstein and Elsa grew and led to their marriage only a few months after Einstein's divorce in 1919. Albert and Elsa did not have any children together but Albert treated his step-daughters, Ilse and Margot, as if they were his own. Elsa acted as a buffer between Einstein and unwanted visitors and those that wanted to take advantage of him. Elsa died in 1936 of heart and kidney problems, devastating Einstein.
