There have been Fourteen (14) vice presidents who became president of the United States. Eight of these were because of the death of the sitting president. Four is the number of vice presidents who went directly from that office to the presidency. They are John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Van Buren and George H.W. Bush.

One vice president who became president did not go directly from one office to the other. Richard Nixon left the office of vice president in 1961 and was inaugurated as president in 1969. Subsequently, when President Nixon had to resign from office, Vice President Gerald Ford in 1974 moved into the office of the presidency. This is the only time that resignation has caused a change in the office.
