"I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form" is a line from which of these songs?
The song lyric "I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form" is from "Shelter from the Storm", a song by Bob Dylan, which he recorded in September 1974 and released on his 15th studio album "Blood on the Tracks" in 1975.
Some music analysts like to argue that the first eight verses of the song may well be poetically speaking to the deteriorating relationship between Dylan and his first wife, Sara. Most analysts have concluded that said event, understandably, played a role in the composition of "Shelter from the Storm". The couple (Bob and Sara) did not divorce until 1977, but it was during 1974 that their marriage, according to Sara, “started breaking up”.
In the song, the female character is giving the vocalist (the male) “shelter from the storm”. And, as for who the narrator (vocalist) actually is, he takes on a number of different roles and characteristics. Ultimately, they all point to the concept of the world being a less-than-ideal place, due to one reason or another, and it is not therefore the best place for him. Such adversities are what “the storm” represents. And again, it is the female character who is providing him relief from his hardships.
During the 5th verse and especially the 6th, it is really implied that female may be a romantic interest. The vocalist alludes to ‘taking too much for granted’ in their relationship and subsequently messing it up. He is appreciative of his ex; her love really sheltered him from the cold, cruel world.
