The 2006 film "The Departed" is a crime thriller. It was directed by Martin Scorsese and written by William Monahan. It is a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film "Infernal Affairs"; it is based loosely on the real-life Boston Winter Hill Gang. The character of Sergeant Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is based on a corrupt FBI agent John Connolly. The character of Francis "Frank" Costello (Jack Nicholson) is based on Irish-American crime boss Whitey Bulger. The film also stars Leonardo DiCaprio (Trooper William "Billy" Costigan Jr.) and Mark Wahlberg (Sergeant Sean Dignam). Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone, Vera Farmiga, Alec Baldwin, Anthony Anderson and James Badge Dale are acting in supporting roles.

The film takes place in Boston, Massachusetts. Mostly, South End Boston neighborhoods are involved. Irish Mob boss Costello (Nicholson) plants Colin (Damon) as a spy within the Massachusetts State Police. Simultaneously, the police assign undercover state trooper Costigan to infiltrate Costello's criminal mob. When the sides realize the situation, Sullivan and Costigan each attempt to discover the other's identity.

In a scene in the movie it is Costello who says, "I don't want to be a product of my environment; I want my environment to be a product of me." It seems to mean: "Don't let your environment to alter you, change you, or influence you to the point of losing yourself. You have to be the one who influences your environment in the way you want, make an impact and change things."
