"I found her diary underneath a tree and started reading about me" are lyrics that open a song by which band?
"Diary" is a song written by David Gates released by his band Bread in 1972, both as a single and on the album "Baby I'm-a Want You".
This song is about a boy who is in love with a girl. He finds her diary and reads it, only to find out she is in love with someone else.
It spent 11 weeks on the "Billboard" Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 15, and reached No. 3 on "Billboard's" Easy Listening chart, No. 12 in Canada, and No. 26 in Australia. The song was ranked No. 50 on "Billboard's" year-end ranking of 1972's "Top Easy Listening Singles".
Bread was an American soft rock band from Los Angeles, California. They had 13 songs chart on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1970 and 1977.
The band was fronted by David Gates (vocals, bass guitar, guitar, keyboards, violin, viola, percussion), with Jimmy Griffin (vocals, guitar, keyboards, percussion) and Robb Royer (bass guitar, guitar, flute, keyboards, percussion, recorder, backing vocals). Mike Botts became their permanent drummer when he joined in the summer of 1969, and Larry Knechtel replaced Royer in 1971, playing keyboards, bass guitar, guitar, and harmonica. In 2005, both Griffin and Botts died from cancer at the age of 61. In August 2009, Knechtel died of a heart attack at the age of 69, leaving Gates and Royer as the only surviving members of Bread. Royer continues to be involved in music. Gates is retired. The opening lyrics are: "I found her diary underneath a tree and started reading about me".
