The Code was in honor of Bertram James Hogg, who rose from being an aircraft mechanic for Inter Island Airlines to Mail Pilot and Commercial Airline Pilot for Hawaiian Airlines after the company changed its hame. He helped with the radio equipment for IFR at the airport. He Chose OCG rather than HOG for the designation. Hog began flying in the 1930s and retired in 1968. He died in 1982 at the age of 84. The OCG designation was given to Kahului Airport in 1957.

The explanation did not explain how airport codes are determined. Are they distinct to countries? Do the letters run alphabetically east to west? Codes without any basis doesn't explain anything.

Funny that so many guessed Oregon City because of the similarity to OGG. I live in Portland, and Oregon City, which is nearby, does not have an airport that I know of.

Usually the 3 letter identifiers resemble (at least somewhat) the name of the airport or geographic area. Really a difficult question, unless you have inside information.
