In 1888-1890, “The Brooklyn Baseball Association” team was called what name by local sportswriters?
The current Major League Baseball Club, “Los Angeles Dodgers”, previously had its home in Brooklyn, New York for many years. Officially, the team was named the “Brooklyn Base Ball Association“, but from 1888-1890 the team was given the nick-name, “The Bridegrooms” by local sportswriters because 4 players had gotten married during the off-season. Later, in 1891, the name was shortened to “Grooms”. The nick-name changed back to “Bridegrooms” in 1896-1898.
The team was a member of the American Association and played most of their home games at “Washington Park” named after George Washington. They came in second place in 1888 behind the “St. Louis Browns”. They won the pennant (championship) in 1889 and after joining the National League won the 1890 pennant. They were the only Major League Baseball team to win the championship back to back in two different leagues.
The official name “Dodgers” did not appear until 1932 when the name was placed on the front of the players’ jerseys. In 1933, the name “Dodgers”, was also placed on the players’ “away” jerseys.
