On October 14, 1987, 18-month-old Jessica McClure fell into a well on the property of an aunt who also resided in Midland, Texas. She was trapped in the well casing—which was 8 inches in diameter and 22 feet below ground—for more than two days. CNN, then new to cable TV, broadcast the incident around the clock for the duration.

It was decided that the quickest way to reach “Baby Jessica” was to drill a shaft parallel to the well and then tunnel to the well. But the rocky ground in the backyard was so hard, the drillers’ tools made slow progress. Once the shaft was complete, it took even longer to create the tunnel using pneumatic drills. These “jackhammers” are designed for downward—not sideways—use.

After toiling without pause for 58 hours, members of the Midland Police and Fire Departments, oil-well drillers, contractors, and others—including a mining engineer brought in to coordinate the rescue of “Everybody’s Baby"—succeeded. Midland Fire Department (MFD) Paramedic Robert O’Donnell crawled through the tunnel, dislodged Jessica, and gave her to his fellow MFD Paramedic Steve Forbes, who carried her up the shaft.

Doug McClure was married five times and divorced four, but none of his wives was named Jessica. Later in life, Jessica married and divorced Daniel Morales, but she never flew for NASA and, asof this writing, has not become a nun.
