Tony Randall voiced the intellectually-superior, witty, smooth-talking leader of the group. These “new batch” gremlins resulted from experiments conducted on Gizmo, the original gremlin from the 1984 film, “Gremlins”. In that film, infant gremlins pop off an existing gremlin’s body when it is wet. And, when fed after midnight, gremlins turn from cute, furry creatures into monsters.

In “Gremlins”, Gizmo is purchased as a Christmas gift for Billy, the son of an inventor. He gets wet and his offspring eat after midnight. Gizmo and Billy stop the little monsters from destroying Billy’s town. Gizmo’s original owner, Mr. Wing, buys him back. After the end of the film, Mr. Wing dies and Gizmo is taken to Clamp Enterprises, based in a New York City skyscraper.

There, the new gremlins get into a laboratory where DNA research is being done. One gremlin drinks a potion that gives him high intelligence. This one is named “Brain”, and speaks just like Tony Randall does. Brain’s plans to take over the world are foiled by Billy and Gizmo. Billy and his love interest from “Gremlins”, Kate, take Gizmo home with them.
