A submarine sandwich, which is known by many names (sub, hoagie, torpedo, hero, Italian, or grinder) is a type of cold or hot sandwich made from a cylindrical bread roll split lengthwise. It can stuffed with a variety of fillings.
The longest sandwich on record as of 2011 is a chicken submarine sandwich which was made in Hazmieh, Lebanon (a suburb of Beirut) by a total of 775 participants, divided into teams. The team which was involved in the preparation and cooking of the sandwich was composed of 136 people, and it took another 639 participants to chop, slice and otherwise prepare the ingredients, then fill the sandwich. The entire process took 22 hours to complete.
The enormous chicken sub sandwich was made by using four movable ovens to bake one continuous piece of bread measuring 2,411 feet and five inches (734.9 meters). The rolling ovens were specially-built in order to bake the long continuous piece of bread. Bread dough was divided into sections and rolled out, at which point the sections were joined together by further rolling,
Despite the record breaker’s massive size, the teams didn’t skimp on the ingredients. The sandwich was piled high with chicken, lettuce, tomato, pickles, mayonnaise, vinegar, salt, mustard, lemon juice, and spices. Thanks to all of the fillings and toppings, the sandwich, which was approximately five inches (12.5 centimeters) wide, weighed an estimated 1,272 pounds (577 kilograms).
