Orchids are big business, to the tune of $400 million (340 million EURO) per year globally, and Thailand has been blessed with an abundance of exotic orchids. In Jan 2018 the country was recognized as the world’s largest producer and exporter of tropical orchids.

Thailand’s subtropical climate provides perfect conditions for orchids to grow and thrive. Over 1,000 different species of orchids can be found across the country; they run the gamut from wild orchids in the mountains to cultivated plants in the cities and on orchid farms. At the beginning of 2018, there were about 3,000 orchid growers in the country.

Thai people consider the beautiful, colorful, and long-lasting blooms to be a sign of hospitality. Yet, while the flowers are certainly enjoyed and appreciated locally, a significant portion of the orchids grown in Thailand are exported to other markets around the world.

In 2018 about 40 percent of Thai cut orchid production was destined for export; the remaining 60 percent was used in the country. Most of the exports went to just six countries; the US, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands, China, and India.

As might be expected, Thailand’s National Flower is an orchid, “Ratchaphruek”, (also called “dok Koon” in the native language). The tree on which this flower grows is called the “Golden Shower”. This particular orchid (shown in the photo) was chosen because of its bright yellow color, which is associated with Buddhism, harmony, and peace.
