Norwegian ("Norsk") is a North Germanic language spoken mainly in Norway, where it is one of the two official languages. There are two written standards for Norwegian. Bokmål ("book tongue") is the preferred written standard of Norwegian for 85% to 90% of the population in Norway; Nynorsk ("New Norwegian") is the other. However, Bokmål and Nynorsk are not separate languages, but rather two templates for the written version of the same language, Norwegian.

Danish and Scandoromani are recognised national languages in Norway, alongside Norwegian. However, Sámi is special: not only is it a recognised language, it is also one of the two official languages in Norway. This is the language spoken by the Sámi people inhabiting the region of Sápmi in Northern Europe (in parts of northern Finland and Sweden as well as Norway). The Sámi have historically been known in English as Lapps or Laplanders, but these terms are regarded as offensive by the Sámi, who prefer the name of their people and of the area where they live to be expressed in their own language.
