During his life, Ernie Nevers was both a player and coach for the Chicago Cardinals in 1929. In a game against the local rival, the Chicago Bears, history was made when in a single game as a player, Nevers scored six touchdowns and kicked four extra points to get forty (40) points. Specifically, on November 28, 1929, it was stated that in a rival football match that had recently been played Ernie Nevers very decisively defeated the Chicago Bears.

Now, due to current football philosophy of focusing more on team play than actions of individuals, the feat by Nevers may never be repeated. Only Clinton Portis has come close to matching it in 2003 with five touchdowns.

The record on points scored by a single player in a single game held by Nevers should continue for years to come and possibly forever.
