In boxing, what is a check hook?
This is used mostly against an aggressive opponent. Although difficult to execute, as timing must be very precise. If done properly, it will cause your opponent to overstep and end up having to change his position causing him to have to recalculate his next move.
The pivot is always in the same direction as the hook. For example, a right-handed boxer (orthodox stance) would only throw a left hook and upon returning the hook to a defensive position, would then pivot to the right. A boxer would never pivot in the opposite direction as it is sloppy and causes the boxer to be off-balance.
