Mount Othrys is located in central Greece in the northeastern part of Phthiotis and the southern part of Magnesia. It’s the highest summit is 1,726 meters or 5,663 feet above sea level, located on the border of these two areas. Today, the population density in the area is low with a few small villages located at the base surrounding the mountain. In Greek mythology, Mount Othrys was the base for Kronos who was the leader and youngest of the first generation of Titans. The Titans were the pre-Olympian gods who conducted a war for 10 years with the Olympian gods known as the Titanomachy. The Olympian gods were led by Kronos’s son Zeus in the decade long conflict. Subsequently, the Olympians came to reign on Mount Olympus and Zeus later overthrew his father and gained dominion over all the heavens and the earth. This battle is known by different names including the War of the Titans, Battle of the Titans, Battle of the gods or just the Titan War.

Some other Greek gods were also born at Mount Othrys including Hestia, the virgin goddess of the hearth, Demeter, the goddess of the harvest and agriculture, Hera, the goddess of women, marriage, family and childbirth, Hades, the god of the dead and king of the underworld, plus Poseidon, the god of the sea, storms, earthquakes and horses.
