In Greek mythology, Cronus was the father of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. Zeus and his brothers overthrew the Titans which included their father. Next, they drew lots to determine how they would rule the world. Zeus won the draw and became the supreme ruler of the gods. He was lord of the sky, and often called god of rain. His weapon was a thunderbolt, which he hurled at those who displease him. Poseidon became lord of the sea and was worshiped by seamen. Finally, Hades who got the worst draw was made lord of the underworld. He specifically ruled over the dead. He was seen as a greedy god, who tried to greatly increase the number of his subjects.

Cronus was the ruling Titan who came to power by castrating his father Uranus. His wife was Rhea, and their offspring were the first of the Olympians. To ensure his safety, Cronus ate each of his children as they were born. This worked until Rhea, unhappy at the loss of her children, tricked Cronus into swallowing a rock, instead of Zeus. When he grew up, Zeus revolted against Cronus and the other Titans. He defeated them and banished them to Tartarus in the underworld.

However, some stories hold that Cronus managed to escape the underworld and reach Italy. In Italy, he ruled as Saturn. The period of his rule was said to be a golden age on earth, honored by the Saturnalia feast.

In Athens, a festival was also held. It honored Cronus, and was called Kronia.
