Dionysos was a son of Zeus and the mortal princess Semele of Thebes. He was the god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine, of ritual madness, religious ecstasy and theatre.

One of the myths involving Dionysos is when Semele was pregnant with him, Zeus's jealous wife Hera tricked Semele into asking Zeus to reveal his true self and when he did Semele was killed by Zeus's accidental thunder bolts.

Dionysos instructed Ikarios of Athens in the art of winemaking but some shepherds, upon drinking the wine, thought they had been poisoned and killed him.

Dionysos journeyed to the underworld to recover his mother Semele and brought her to Olympos where Zeus transformed her to the goddess Thyone.
