In ice hockey, a "Gordie Howe hat trick" occurs if the same player performs which events?
In ice hockey, a hat trick occurs when the same player scores 3 goals in one game. Some fans sitting in the arena close to the ice surface will toss their hats over the glass onto the ice when the third goal is scored as a recognition of the player's accomplishment.
A "Gordie Howe hat trick" is a variation of this regular hat trick (sometimes written hat-trick). It occurs whenever a player scores 1 goal, records 1 assist and gets into a fight, all in the same game. It is named after Gordie Howe, who is known as "Mr. Hockey".
Howe could both set up other players to score a goal, earning himself an assist in a game, as well as score goals in the same game and then even fight an opponent when necessary. Fighting would result in a penalty to the players involved, removing them from the action for a time period.
Ironically, although Howe played in 2,421 professional hockey games, Howe himself only achieved two 'Gordie Howe hat tricks' in his National Hockey League (NHL) career. Teams he played for in the NHL- Detroit Red Wings and the Hartford Whalers. In the World Hockey Association he played for the Houston Aeros and the New England Whalers.
Gordie Howe (1928-2016) was a Canadian born professional ice hockey player who played 26 seasons in the NHL and 6 seasons in the WHA. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972 and then in 2017, Howe was named one of the "100 Greatest NHL Players."
