In J.R.R. Tolkien's work, the phrase "All that is gold does not glitter" refers to whom?
Aragorn, from J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, was heir to the Throne of Gondor. However, he had been in the north country since birth, awaiting the proper time to reclaim his throne. When Frodo and Company met him, all they had to identify him as friendly were the lines of the verse that went with his name.
J.R.R. Tolkien was an English writer, poet, philologist and academic. (1892-1973). Some of the other books he authored were "The Hobbit" and "The Silmarillion."

I always thought it was "all that glitters is not gold".

I knew that it couldn't refer to one of the major characters, but it's been 60 years since I read the books, so it's fortunate that there was only one more character left to choose.
