Odin, also called Wodan, Woden, or Wotan, is one of the principal -if not the principal- gods in Norse mythology. In outward appearance, he was a tall, old man, with a flowing beard and only one eye. He was usually depicted wearing a cloak and a wide-brimmed hat and carrying a spear named “Gungnir”. He is often accompanied by his animal companions, the wolves Geri and Freki and the ravens Huginn and Muninn, who bring him information from all over “Midgard", and rides the flying, eight-legged steed Sleipnir across the sky and into the underworld. In Germanic cosmology, “Midgard” is the name for Earth inhabited by and known to humans.

Odin was titled the “Allfather”, to which all children serve him. And by his side sat his main wife Frigga, who apparently knew the fates of men. Odin was also the god of all creation and time and the god of poets.

Odin’s quest for wisdom was never-ending, and he was willing to pay any price for the understanding of life’s mysteries. Odin’s Teacher, Mímir, was a giant who lived in the roots of Yggdrasil and guarded the well to the spring of Mimir which was the source of all knowledge. Odin sacrificed one of his eyes at Mímir‘s spring in order to gain wisdom. After the sacrifice of his eye, Odin drank the water from the well to become the wisest of gods and men.

As a war god, he appeared as the protector of fallen warriors who joined him in Valhalla, the hall of heroes, who live there blissfully under his leadership.
