In November 1942 US forces took part in Operation Torch, a seaborne invasion: who was the enemy?
"The State of France" was the official name of so-called "Vichy France" a puppet state of Nazi Germany. Operation Torch was part of an Allied plan to liberate the whole of North Africa. It involved an invasion of French Morocco and French Algeria. It was hoped that the participation of US troops would make the Vichy French less inclined to resist because of old ties between France and the US. But the landings were resisted and about 500 Allied troops died.

Wrong answer: Torch was against Germany forces in North Africa. Regardk]less who they were
fighting at that time. It wasn't just Vichy French only. This question, in my opinion, shouldn't have gone this far.

I believe the enemy in 1942 was The Axis. They had declared war against numerous countries represented by The Axis. But, if you want to define it more narrowly, they had never declared war on FRANCE, so OBVIOUSLY the answer has to be GERMANY. BAD QUESTION.

I got it right but I can see the confusion. At the time, Nazi Germany & Mussolini's Italy were fighting in North Africa, though Vichy France was the main target, it was to get at the Axis countries.

France was not a kingdom. Also, the naval forces fought German forces, so they were the enemy.
