When Benjamin (Dustin Hoffman) and Elaine (Katharine Ross) go on a date in "The Graduate", he tries to sabotage it by ignoring her and driving recklessly. He takes her to a strip club. Once he stops the car, they walk to a bar (strip club) as rock music plays. A group of counter cultural twenty somethings have also come to this place.

When they walk into the dimly lit and smoky strip club, Ben takes a seat close to the stage. Elaine appears to be scandalized and hesitates to sit down next to him. A dancing girl in a silver sequined bikini is dancing to slinky dance music. As Elaine stares at him, Ben asks her why she is not watching the show, to which she responds, “Benjamin, do you dislike me for some reason?”

Next, Elaine has her back to the stripper, who is waving tassels with her breasts. Ben yells, “There’s a great effect there!”; Elaine sneaks a quick peek. The dancer then comes up behind Elaine and spins her tassels just above Elaine’s head. Ben looks smartly at both of them. Elaine begins to cry; Ben pushes the stripper away. They run out of the club. Elaine is leading the way. Ben realizes how rude he has been to Elaine.

It is clear that Ben is a brave person. But, he is still a confused protagonist. He is wandering blindly into a high-risk romantic situation. Mike Nichols, the director, is telling the story of Ben’s thwarted personal desires mostly without much dialogue. The soundtrack and good images make the difference. This film was radical for its time!
