Suzanne Nadine Vega was born on July 11th 1959 in Santa Monica, California. She is an American singer-songwriter, musician and record producer, best known for her eclectic folk-inspired music.
"Luka" is a song written and performed by Suzanne Vega. It was released as a single in 1987 and first featured on Vega's album, "Solitude Standing".
According to Song Facts, Vega explained in 1987 on Swedish Television, that a few years ago, she used to see this group of children playing. There was one whose name was Luka, who seemed different from the other children. She always remembered his name and face. She didn't know much about him, but only that he just seemed different from the other children playing. His character was what she based the song 'Luka' on. In the song, the boy Luka is an abused child. In real life she didn't think he was but she thought he was just different.
It debuted at number two in the U.K. and went gold within three months in the U.S. It peaked at number 11 before eventually going platinum. "Luka" went to number three in the American pop charts which was unheard of for a singer/songwriter in the eighties. It was nominated for three Grammys.
The opening lyrics are:
"My name is Luka
I live on the second floor”
