In the 1990 film "Days of Thunder", Cole Trickle's green and yellow car was sponsored by the Mello Yello product brand. Mello Yello was featured in the sports action NASCAR drama where Tom Cruise's character, Cole Trickle, drove the Mello Yello sponsored car to victory in the Daytona 500. The product name itself (Mello Yello) is never verbally mentioned in the movie. It is clearly seen on the car and driver.

The next year the uniforms being worn, insignia and symbols on a real Mello Yello race car team had a green and yellow NASCAR paint scheme. Driver Kyle Petty drove with Mello Yello sponsorship in the Winston Cup Series. He had four seasons (1991–1994) with the citrus soda sponsor before switching to a different sponsor.

In 2015 Mello Yello unveiled a new logo and packaging design. It featured a new stylized "MY" emblem in black on yellow. This logo was only used for the regular flavor variant and Mello Yello Zero. The flavor variants Mello Yello Cherry and Peach continued to use the previous logo until 2017.
