In the Christian Bible, Book of Judges 16:1 - 3, it is noted that after sleeping with a harlot in Gaza, Samson took away the doors of the city gate and the two posts.

The story, which is hard to establish as either fact or fiction, holds that the Gazites were told, "Samson is here!" They planned to wait for him all night at the doors of the city gate. They hoped that things would be quiet during the entire night. With the morning light, they could surround Samson and then kill him.

Samson did not give the Gazites a chance to execute their plan. He delayed taking any action until midnight, and at midnight he arose and took hold of the doors of the city gate and the two posts. He pulled them up along with some bars; he put them on his shoulders and carried them up to the top of the mountain which was opposite Hebron.

Later, in the Valley of Sorek, Samson fell in love with a woman whose name was Delilah.
