Kevin Costner stars in and directs Dances With Wolves, an epic 1990 American western about Lieutenant John Dunbar, a fictional U.S. cavalryman who, after serving in the Union Army during the Civil War, arrives at a deserted U.S. military post in Sioux territory and decides to remain, developing an unusually supportive and special relationship with his Native American neighbors. Observing his action as he tries to make the military post a viable base of operations is a lone grey wolf who is gradually befriended by Lt. Dunbar and named Two Socks (because he has two white forepaws). He's so protective of his four-legged companion that at one point, while journeying to the Sioux village, and noticing the wolf following him, he actually gets off his horse and jumps around, trying to create enough of a commotion to convince the wolf to stay put. All of this activity is observed by a group of befuddled Sioux, resulting in Dunbar being given a Sioux name, which, translated into English, means Dances with Wolves.
