During the first few years of the comic strip, "Milo" owned a dog named "Rabies" and his appearances were limited mostly to the Sunday edition, leaning against the inlays while smoking a cigar. "Rosebud the Basselope" is technically not a true dog. He is a cross between a basset hound and an antelope, who is the last of his kind. All the others died off because they adored massive amounts of butter on their pop-tarts.

"The Giant Purple Snorklewacker" is a purple monster who lives in "Binkley's" anxiety closet.

"Bloom County" recently was re-introduced as a Facebook publication by Berkeley Breathed in 2015 after a 25 year hiatus. The comic strip ran from December 1980 until August 6, 1989. The comic strip started as "The Academia Waltz" for "The Daily Texan", a periodical for the University of Texas at Austin, during Breathed's college days.

Rabies disappeared about the same time Opus, the beloved penguin, was introduced. Breathed was rumored to have stated that dogs were all over the funny pages and wanted a unique character to enhance his comic.

"Bloom County" has been known to poke fun at all types of politics, world events, sociology, TV, and culture in general.
