In the 20th Century Fox film "Cast Away" (2000), Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks) is an executive working for FedEx, a major U.S. multinational courier (package) delivery services company. Within this company, Chuck had a job as a time-obsessed systems engineer. He would travel worldwide resolving productivity problems at FedEx service depots.

Chuck was also in a long-term relationship with Kelly Frears (Helen Hunt). They were living together in Memphis, Tennessee, the FedEx company headquarters. Although they want to get married, Chuck's busy job schedule interfered with their relationship. In December 1965, their Christmas with relatives was interrupted when Chuck was summoned to resolve a company problem in Malaysia. While flying through a violent storm, his plane crashes into the Pacific Ocean.

Chuck escapes from the sinking plane and is saved by using an inflatable life raft. As he clings to the life raft, he loses consciousness. He floats all night before washing up on an uninhabited island. During his ordeal, Chuck is not able to save the emergency locator transmitter. He doesn't know or believe that anyone knows about his present circumstances.
