During the U.S. Civil War, Union Army Officer Lieutenant John J. Dunbar (Kevin Costner) is injured in battle. So, because of his actions, his commanding officer recognizes him as a hero and gives him Cisco, the horse that has carried him in battle and a choice of where he would like to be stationed.

Dunbar, anxious to see the U.S. Western frontier before it ends, requests transfer west. He is given an assignment to Fort Sedgwick. When Dunbar gets to Fort Sedgwick, he finds it deserted except for a lone wolf that he later befriends and dubs Two Socks, because of the coloring of its front legs. So while he is waiting for reinforcements to arrive, he sets about bringing order the deserted post, which was left in complete disarray by its previous occupants.

Because of factual circumstances (the death of his prior boss, Major Fambrough played by Maury Chaykin), Dunbar is effectively isolated and remains unaware of his full situation and its implications. He does however note in his journal how strange it is that no other soldiers have been sent to join him at the fort.

This 1990 film (Dances With Wolves) in its entirety will ultimately provide a credible answer to the question of what happens to Dunbar while he is performing his duties at Fort Sedgwick.
