Frank Morgan (born Francis Wuppermann) was seen as a jovial and somewhat flamboyant actor. He shall always be remembered as the title character in "The Wizard of Oz" (1939). However, he was a veteran and respected actor long before he played the part of the Wizard. He was one of 11 children, and he followed his older brother, Ralph Morgan (born Raphael Wuppermann) into the acting profession. He made his big film acting debut in 1916 in "The Suspect". His active years as a professional actor were from 1914–1949. He died in September 1949 at the age of 59 in Beverly Hills, California.

In the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz", the Wizard's character is seen as a bumbling "humbug" figure. This key role was played by Frank Morgan who also played several other fun and astute roles including Professor Marvel (the mysterious traveling fortune-teller who Dorothy meets in Kansas with a horse named Sylvester), the Doorman at the Emerald City, the Guard at the Gates to the Wizard's Castle, and the Coachman whose transport is drawn by "The Horse of a Different Color".

As a result of his career, Morgan was nominated for two Academy Awards, one for Best Actor in "The Affairs of Cellini" (1934) and one for Best Supporting Actor in "Tortilla Flat" (1942). He made around 100 films and never was able to win an Oscar.
