In the 1986 film "Top Gun", the aircraft carrier (USS Enterprise) is located in the Indian Ocean. Tom Cruise plays Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a young naval aviator aboard the USS Enterprise. He and his Radar Intercept Officer, Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) are given the chance to train at the United States Navy's Fighter Weapons School at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California.

After graduation from the US naval training school, there is a major scene where Maverick and others are back on the aircraft carrier in the Indian Ocean. James Tolkan as CDR Tom "Stinger" Jardian (Commander of the USS Enterprise) is outlining a very important and immediate mission. All on the carrier know that they are in an ocean, which is the third-largest of the world's oceanic divisions, containing 19.8% of the water on Earth's surface. It is bounded by Asia to the north, Africa to the west, and Australia to the east.

A communications ship has become disabled and wandered into foreign territory. It needs rescuing. Stinger notes that enemy MiG-29 jets may become involved. He instructs the men, “If you witness a hostile act, you will return fire.” Maverick is assigned to fly with Merlin (Tim Robbins), backing up Iceman (Val Kilmer) and Hollywood (Whip Hubley). Iceman goes to Stinger; he wants to talk about whether Maverick is the best backup. Stinger tells him to get over it. He must focus on his own actions and the extremely critical mission being successful.
