Apollonia Vitelli was Michael Corleone's first wife in "The Godfather" movie trilogy.

Apollonia was 17 when she married Corleone in the first "Godfather" movie. Corleone was hiding out in Sicily after gunning down gangster Virgil Sollozzo and N.Y.P.D. Captain McCluskey after an assassination attempt on his father, mob boss Vito Corleone.

Apollonia was the daughter of a Greek mother and Sicilian father who were both incredibly protective of her. Corleone had asked permission of her father to meet the young beauty in the presence of her entire family as a sign of respect.

Tragically, Apollonia was killed shortly after their marriage when one of Corleone's body guards betrayed him, planting a car bomb in their vehicle. The bomb was meant for Corleone, but Apollonia turned the car on while begging him for more driving lessons. In a deleted scene in "The Godfather, Part II", Corleone finds the body guard and has him killed in Buffalo, N.Y.

Apollonia was portrayed by Italian actress Simonetta Stefanelli, who was really 17 when the film was made. Stefanelli retired from acting in 1992 and now owns a fashion store in Rome.
