In the 1974 film "The Godfather Part II", Al Pacino as Michael Corleone says Hyman Roth, a mob boss, casino-owner, and financier will not live to see the New Year (1958/59). It is during Fulgencio Batista's (Tito Alba) last night of leadership as the dictator of Cuba in the 1950s that Michael orders Roth killed. He will then tell his brother Fredo (John Cazale), "Hyman Roth will never see the New Year."

The same night that Michael orders the murder of Roth, he also orders another murder. He wants Johnny Ola, a Sicilian mobster and right hand man to Hyman Roth, killed. Michael's bodyguard, Bussetta, goes to kill Roth. Roth is ill and lying in bed in a hospital when Bussetta sneaks in and tries to suffocate him with a pillow. Fortunately for Roth, members of the Cuban military arrive in time to save him. They kill the bodyguard. While the actions against Roth are taking place, Michael then finds out that Fredo had betrayed his interests to Roth.

Prior to their differences, Roth had worked diligently for the Corleone family during Prohibition. He was a close friend and ally of Moe Greene, the "inventor" of Las Vegas for the crime families. Roth, as well as Don Corleone, both got their starts working together running molasses out of Cuba. It is suggested, however, that Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro) never fully trusted Roth, nor did many of his close associates, including Johnny Ola.

Since Roth was not killed, he wanted to retire and live in Israel.
