Released in 1964 and based on Ian Fleming's book of the same name, 'Goldfinger' was the third in the official series of James Bond films. The plot sees Sean Connery as Bond, pursue the antagonist, Auric Goldfinger, portrayed by German actor Gert Fröbe, across Europe in an attempt to expose and thwart his gold-smuggling operations. Little does he know that these are merely the start of Goldfinger's nefarious plans...

Other notable actors in the film include:

Honor Blackman, as Goldfinger's glamorous ace pilot;

Harold Sakata as his fearsome, steel-rimmed hat wielding valet-cum-bodyguard, Oddjob;

and Shirley Eaton as Bond's love-interest, Jill Masterton.

Widely recognised as setting the formula for the Bond series going forward, 'Goldfinger' is awash with girls, glamour and gadgets. It is remembered for its powerful theme song, the first of three in the series performed by Welsh singer Shirley Bassey; and for one notable scene in which Shirley Eaton's character is found dead, having suffocated after Goldfinger covered her entire body in gold paint.

The name 'Auric' is derived from the latin for gold : aurum. Interestingly, actor Gert Fröbe spoke little English, and as a result, most of his dialogue in the finished film is overdubbed by stage actor Michael Collins.
