"Harvey" was a 1950 comedy-drama, directed by Henry Koster, about a wealthy, eccentric man, Elwood Dowd, played by James Stewart, who sees a 6' 3 1/2" rabbit. Elwood is also partial to drinking at "Charlie's Bar", where his bartender (Mr. Cracker) and the regulars accepted Harvey, but never saw him. Throughout the movie, no one but Elwood sees this "pooka" (a mischievous apparition of Celtic Mythology) until towards the end of the movie.

Veta Simmons, played by Josephine Hull and Elwood's sister, tries to have Elwood committed, where Dr. Chumley, head of the asylum, wants the "pleasantness" that Elwood claims his mother explained to him: "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant. Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant." Harvey agrees and "takes" Dr. Chumley to Akron by overcoming time and space.

In the end of the movie, Harvey returns with Dr. Chumley and walks away with Elwood, presumably for "Charlie's Bar".

Stewart called Elwood his most favorite character he played in motion pictures.

"Harvey" was played by "Himself" from the credits.
