In the movie "It's a Wonderful Life", how much money did Uncle Billy lose?
Uncle Billy lost $8,000 dollars in the movie "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946). The main characters in this film are: James Stewart as George Bailey, Donna Reed as Mary Hatch, Lionel Barrymore as Mr. Henry Potter, Thomas Mitchell as Uncle Billy, Todd Karns as Harry Bailey (George's brother), Henry Travers as Clarence, Beulah Bondi as Mrs. Bailey, Frank Faylen as Ernie, Ward Bond as Bert, and Gloria Grahame as Violet.
In the film, during World War II, George is ineligible for service because he is deaf in one ear. Harry becomes a Navy pilot and earns the Medal of Honor for shooting down a kamikaze plane headed for a troop transport. On Christmas Eve 1945, as the town prepares a hero's welcome for Harry, Uncle Billy goes to the bank to deposit $8,000 (equivalent to $110,000 in 2019). It is cash that belongs to Bailey Brothers' Building and Loan.
Uncle Billy taunts Henry F. Potter, a man who wants to dissolve Building and Loan. Billy is using a newspaper headline about Harry; he unintentionally however wraps the envelope with the cash in Potter’s newspaper. Billy realizes he has misplaced the cash. Potter finds the envelope but says nothing. When a bank examiner reviews the records of the Building and Loan, George realizes scandal and criminal charges will follow. Fruitlessly retracing Billy's steps, George berates him and takes out his frustration on his entire family. Clarence must show George that his life has touched and helped others. He's been lucky (blessed).
