The two turtles that appeared in the original 1976 Rocky picture were female red-eared sliders named Cuff and Link. In the movie, Adrian (who is to become Rocky Balboa's wife) works in a pet store. As a way of getting her attention, Rocky buys the two turtles from her. Afterwards, he names the turtles, Cuff and Link.

Like most turtle species, they live for an amazingly long time. After shooting the first movie, Sylvester Stallone (writer and star) took them home. Almost 31 years after appearing in the first movie, the original reptiles received screen time in the movie Rocky Balboa (2006). The turtles are Rocky’s only two immediate companions after the death of his wife, Adrian. In the years following his championship fight (along with his dog, Punchy, and Adrian’s brother Paulie), the two turtles remain Rocky’s steadfast friends.
