The Monty Python comedy troupe debuted "The Lumberjack Song" on BBC1 in December 1969 on Monty Python's Flying Circus. The song was written and composed by Terry Jones, Michael Palin, and Fred Tomlinson. From the original release, at the beginning of the song, Michael Palin portrays a barber and explains to a customer how he did not want to be a barber anyway. He wanted to be a lumberjack. He tears off his smock, revealing flannel underneath and starts to sing with a girl by his side and Canadian Mounties as the chorus singers. During the song, Palin sings how he loves cross-dressing in women's garments. The girl and the Mounties eventually get disgusted with him as the song progresses and walk off the set with the girl proclaiming, "I thought you were so rugged!"

Though there have been variances in the starting profession, depending on the genre and location of the performance, a barber was the original profession and released on the official record single. The song was released as a single in November 1975 with the "Spam" song on the flip side, produced by Monty Python fan George Harrison.

The Monty Python comedy troupe has sung this in different languages as they toured across Europe and other areas of the world.
